University of the West of Scotland is Scotland's biggest modern university, with over 19,000 students across four campuses in Ayr, Dumfries, Hamilton and Paisley. Building on our international reputation for excellence, we're growing our extensive range of courses and investing over £160million in facilities, to ensure our students continue to receive an inspiring, internationally recognised educational experience.
Courses in business, computing, creative industries, education, engineering, health, nursing, science and social sciences - designed with input from industry and underpinned by our excellent academic and personal support network.
The University prides itself on providing vocationally relevant study and has a number of strong industrial links. It was the first UK university to gain accreditation with Cisco, Microsoft and Macromedia and became the first CIW-approved authorised training partner outside the US. The University’s Computer Games Technology degree is one of only two in the UK with full accreditation from Skillset, the industry standards body.
Expert input in the form of guest lectures, workshops and seminars helps students gain added insight into their degrees and future careers – serial entrepreneur Chris Gorman is an Honorary Professor of the University and provides an ongoing programme of business start-up and entrepreneurism workshops for students. Students in media have benefited from insight from some of Scotland’s stage and screen stars including actor and director Peter Mullan, and Fran Healy of Brit Award-winning group Travis. Representatives from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe have also participated in student seminars, while motorsport students at the Hamilton campus have enjoyed workshops with rally and autosport experts.
The University has a strong research agenda and is playing a key role in the Scottish Funding Council’s Research Pooling Initiative. The University is home to Scotland’s only Thin Film Centre. The £1.16 million centre carries out cutting-edge research into thin film technology.
A £160million investment programme is proposed across the University campuses, including plans for a £72million redevelopment of the campus in Ayr. The new campus will provide Ayrshire with one of Scotland's most modern, environmentally friendly and sustainable Higher Education learning environments.
