Stellenbosch University is recognised as one of the four top research universities in South Africa. It takes pride in the fact that it has one of the country’s highest proportions of postgraduate students of which almost ten percent are international students.
Stellenbosch University lies in the picturesque Jonkershoek Valley in the heart of the Western Cape winelands. Since its humble beginnings in 1866 when it first opened its doors with about 500 students and 39 lecturers, the University has grown into the internationally recognised institution of excellence it is today with more than 23 000 students, 800 lecturers and some 50 research and service bodies.
The University has ten faculties of which eight – AgriSciences, Arts and Social Sciences, Education, Engineering, Law, Science, Theology and the larger part of Economic and Management Sciences – are located n the main campus in Stellenbosch with the Faculty of Health Sciences situated on the Tygerberg campus. The Bellville Park campus is home to the Business School and the school’s Executive Development programme. The coastal town of Saldanha serves as the base for the Faculty of Military Sciences.
The campuses of Stellenbosch University make up a vibrant melting pot of different cultures and various student organisations can be found on the four campuses. They cater for a wide range of interests such as culture, politics, religious, spiritual concern and relaxation. There are also a number of well-known and established student activities, such as RAG that add to the unique experience of being a “Matie” as a student of Stellenbosch is affectionately known.

Programme: LLM graduate class of 2008
Even after living in Stellenbosch as a student of Stellenbosch University, Faculty of Law for the past year, it is not easy to get over the sense of awe that I felt when I first arrived on campus. Stellenbosch University is a sight to behold. Tucked in at the foot of rugged mountains in a picturesque landscape of endless wine farms, it is easy to understand why the early settlers in this part of the world chose to build a university here.
I settled pretty fast on campus. This was due mainly to the organisational efficiency of the University staff – I received the indispensable electronic student card within a few minutes after registration – and their courteous responsiveness.
The demands of the LLM by course work are quite heavy, especially if one is committed to completing the programme within one academic year. However, my memories of that period are happy ones and there is a sense of accomplishment.
The university has unique strengths. The lecturers are helpful with information and assistance and encourage informal interaction in classes as a form of instruction. This amiability also permeated classroom discussions where group work and PowerPoint presentations were common. Secondly, in terms of access to electronic databases the University is richly resourced. This, coupled with 24-hr access to the internet means that there is continuous access to the latest research in various fields of specialisation. For instance, I found that in International Trade law, which was my LLM track, there was abundant material that was both relevant and recent.
Lastly, I cannot fail to mention the diversity in terms of nationalities represented in my LLM class. There were students from all geographical regions of Africa, including North Africa, the Netherlands and also Germany. At the end of a successful academic year I am grateful to Stellenbosch not only for its rigorous and challenging LLM programme but also for the collegiality and the life-time of friendships I was able to forge.
