First Hotel School

As the first hotel management school in the world, founded in 1893, Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL) offers high-level university studies to talented and ambitious students who are aiming for top careers in the hospitality industry, basing its programmes on its own unique educational philosophy: hospitality management as both a science and an art.

Programmes

Programmes offered at EHL include a Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management degree, a Diploma in Hotel and Restaurant Management and an executive Master in Hospitality Administration.

The programme for the Bachelor of Science degree is structured so that students move from a solid grounding in hospitality service, through general management courses, to advanced courses in hospitality management strategy and increased opportunities for specialization. In their final year, students bring together and consolidate everything they have learned as part of a major Student Business Project.

Two internships form an integral part of the programme, a first in operations and second, offering hotel management training. These internships provide students with the real-life experience which will give them a flying start in the workplace and set the stage for a successful career in hospitality.

The second year focuses on how to create added value for hospitality companies, customers and guests, through optimizing service processes. The modular approach ensures that every aspect of a hospitality company is taken into account in creating value: human resources, finance, marketing, and operations, including rooms and food and beverage.

The Student Business Project is a consulting mandate from a real-life enterprise. Mandates range from planning and market studies, client surveys and business analyses, to the creation of new hospitality and restaurant concepts or products. This project is supervised by INTEHL (EHL’s Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship).

A certain type of person

To be successful in this dynamic business it takes a certain type of person with special qualities and abilities. The passionate diploma, bachelor and masters students are known for their professional manner, their cultural comprehension, their understanding of every level of the industry, and their determination to contribute with creativity and knowledge.

Whereas it is difficult to count an exact number of hours spent in class and on group work per day and week, EHL students should expect to spend long days on campus in class but also in intense, international group work outside of the classroom. Professional training in how to work effectively and efficiently in these international teams is ongoing and creates a competitive advantage for students that aim at international careers in the industry.

Exposure to the industry

Thanks to its close relation with the industry EHL has created various institutes of research and monitoring in the field of hospitality, to provide targeted information to major active stakeholders in the field of hospitality and sustainable development. EHL’s chair for Food & Beverage was the first of its kind.

EHL welcomes approximately 80-90 different companies each year on campus. Over the past 117 years, EHL has educated more that 30’000 hospitality industry executives who now make up a prestigious network for every member of the EHL community. EHL alumni work in 106 countries in the world in sectors such as hotel property & corporate management, corporate finance, real estate, marketing, human resources, information systems, development, law, health business, consulting and auditing.

Restaurants and bars

Both students and staff have the opportunity to take their meals in one of the school’s four restaurants. Creative food concepts range from a salad bar or quick snack through Asian or Mediterranean food or a grill counter to the award-winning fine dining restaurant.

Sport

Both students and staff can take advantage of the extensive sports facilities at EHL, including tennis courts, a gymnasium and a fully-equipped fitness centre. All students and staff may have a personal training programme designed for them. They can also participate in EHL sports teams and in the multiple sports activities available in and around Lausanne.

Individual laptops

Each student is provided with a laptop on arriving at EHL, which will be used for group work and moderated on-line discussions, research, exams and i-Learning (the dynamic and interactive form of e-learning).

EHL e-mail account

All students receive an e-mail account. Graduates retain their EHL e-mail addresses; this lifetime e-mail facilitates communication and networking between EHL and alumni.

My EHL

My EHL is an Intranet that is essential for both studies and life on campus: communication (news, practical information and student life), distribution of course material and assignments, grade viewing and course registration.

Extranet

The My EHL and e-mail accounts are both accessible from off-campus.

Helpdesk

The IT Helpdesk is available throughout the working day to offer support, with individual advice, laptop repairs and system updates.

Mediahl

This multimedia zone is set up with all the necessary programmes and devices for students to produce high-quality audiovisual presentations. The Mediahl helps you use the resources of the media to develop your communication and presentation skills.

It also allows access to Lausanne’s public TV and radio stations (TVRL and Lausanne FM), where some students will work as TV reporters, quickly and under pressure, with valuable professional feedback. Mediahl trains them to communicate when the stress is on and they are in the public eye. It helps them to develop stage presence– a vital quality for hospitality management!

Overview

By actively participating in several student committees I had the opportunity to realize my ideas and practice “business” in a safety net with constant support from EHL staff and faculty.
