Course: A Level (2 years)
A flight to London Heathrow airport, then a one hour bus ride to Oxfordshire … While commencing this journey for the first time, I couldn’t help but feel both nervous and exited. Now, after 2 years of living in Oxford and attending Abacus College, I can say that my feelings did not deceive me.
This truly is the experience of a lifetime which hardly left me or any of the other international students, my fellow schoolmates, room for disappointment. From day one I was happy to find that there was no expected worry or confusion with the enrolment and adaptation to the life in the other country, mostly due to the help of college staff and a well organized induction procedure. Because of the small size of the college, there is a good possibility for the teachers to develop a personal approach and also help you with the choice of the institutions for further education. Also, the College is always eager to help organise a group events, such as sports activities and theatre trips.
Overall, Oxford provides a good atmosphere for education, self-improvement and development of the sense responsibility. However, for some it may have an opposite effect, as freedom and the illusion of financial independence can cause one to celebrate their “maturity” with immature behaviour.
For those who manage to keep the balance between studies and active social life, there is a great scope of activities to choose from. There are cinemas, pubs, night clubs and other places of interest. Finding work for a student is also easier than one might expect, as many coffee shops, bars etc., are often eager to employ students. Apart from providing additional income, work can also provide students with vital experience and help to improve their English.
Oxford also allows students to fulfill their ambitions in non-curricular activities, such as art, music, dancing and martial arts. I find the experience of education in the UK a very pleasant and fertile one so far and have great expectations of the future education to come.
Daniil Zhukov studied on a one year GCSE course before he entered the A Level course and is now in his second year.
